Vanguard

Vanguard’s “Custom Reports” tool lets

you build customized returns based upon

performance returns, fund characteristics

and underlying holdings. The “Research &

Commentary” tab contains updated investment

research and academic studies that

reinforce time-tested investment strategies.

Claymore

Claymore’s Index Allocator allows you

to easily create custom hypothetical

portfolios from a variety of broad market,

equity and income indices along with

more narrow indices focused on specific

industries or market niches. The tool allows

you to create a custom hypothetical

allocation using indices dating back to

December 31, 1991. You can also create

a personalized online proposal or one in

Adobe Acrobat PDF format.

iShares

Barclays Global Investors’ iShares Web site

has many valuable features, including an

“Index Returns Chart” that benchmarks

the performance of indexes in various

asset classes. The “Core/Satellite Portfolio

Builder” tool allows advisors to mix and

match a diverse assortment of index and

active investment strategies together. Customized

reports have pie chart allocations,

hypothetical growth chart, and risk/return

data.

PowerShares ETFs

 

You can sort the PowerShares ETFs to 

discover their portfolio exposure to countries,

geographic regions and industry sectors. The

stock screener allows users to input up to

four stock ticker symbols in order to find out

which PowerShares ETFs own those respective

companies.

Investment Company Institute

 

The Investment Company Institute is a

Washington, D.C. mutual fund trade group that

publishes monthly ETF data. The ICI reports

on the level of ETF assets and the value of

shares created/redeemed. The Institute does

not provide data on ETNs, partnerships or

commodity trusts.

 
ETF Guide

ETFguide’s Index Strategy Maps are a

quick visual reference to help you determine

what the indexes behind your ETFs

are really doing. The online database

also contains snapshots on the entire

ETF/ETN universe. ETFguide’s online

database also allows users to compare the

costs of competing indexing strategies.   

Morningstar

Morningstar’s ETF database reports the

cost of ETF/ETN bid/ask spreads in percentage

terms. This is helpful in determining

which ETFs have the highest/lowest

trading costs. Generally, funds with heavy

trading volume have lower bid/ask spreads

whereas funds with lower trading volume

have higher bid/ask spreads.

Plug into Research magazine’s informative ETF newsletter and get breaking

news about the latest happenings in the

ETF marketplace. You can also download

Research’s ever-popular quarterly ETF Reference Guide in PDF.

SPDR

The “Tools” tab contains excellent features

such as a portfolio constructor and a

portfolio analyzer engine. The SPDR ETF

Quicksheet is a helpful PDF listing that

provides a quick snapshot of SPDR ETFs

organized according to their asset class.

SectorSPDR.com

Just how much do certain individual stocks

correlate with their respective industry sectors?

The answer can be found using a nifty correlation

tracking tool at SectorSPDR.com. Just type

in any stock ticker symbol and it reports which

S&P sector ETFs are most and least correlated

to their movement. The range of results is

reported from -1.0 to +1.0. The tool also reports

the correlation of non-SPDR ETFs.

Yahoo Finance

Yahoo Finance is a highly visited source

for ETF news and data. The site contains

ETF daily quotes, trading volume, call/

put options and various screeners for

finding ETFs.
